Tree Nut Allergies

If you have made a trip to the allergist because your child has a food allergy it can be a scary time.  Both of my boys have food allergies but thankfully I have a nutrition background to fall back on.  But this is why it is so important for EVERYONE to learn how to read a food label!  Look at the “Ingredients” section.  If you are dealing with a TREE NUT allergy here are some key words to look for on a food label:

almonds

artificial nuts

beechnut

Brazil nut

butternut

caponata

cashers

chestnuts

chinquapin

coconut

filbert/hazelnut

gianduja

ginko nut

hickory nut

lichee/lycheenut

macadamia nut

marzipan/almond paste

nan-gai nuts

natural nut extract

nougat

nut butters

nut meal

nut oil

nut paste

nut pieces

pecans

pesto

pili oil

pine nuts (Indian, pinon, pinyon, pignoli, pignolia, or pignon nuts)

pistachios

pralines

sheanut

walnuts

This list is from the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network.   It is advised that people with TREE NUT allergies also avoid peanuts.

Hope this helps!
